I like to shoot a lot of content with GoPro’s. I use them for pretty much anything video related except those rare spontaneous circumstances when I’m caught out and about with only my phone. For anything planned, or where I think there is a chance to capture something neat, I most likely have a GoPro with me. My relationship with GoPro cameras actually goes all the way back to the GoPro Hero 2. I have used the cameras in different capacities over the years and tinkered with a crazy amount of accessories, mounts, and GoPro products. Today I enjoy using GoPro’s to shoot selfie style vlog content, POV footage, unique angles and action, 360VR, time warps & time lapses, and just about anything else you can think of. These are my current top 10 GoPro or action camera accessories and how I use them!
Top 10 GoPro Accessories
Media Mod
I started using the Media Mod with the GoPro Hero 9. This quickly became my main method of shooting selfie style content. For run and gun style videos like vlogging the Media Mod has been a hit. I keep my main GoPro setup with the Media Mod at all times to shoot my primary content, and use the others for my unique shots and B Roll.
Tripod Stick
To GoPro Tripod Stick is a solid all around option. It can be used as a monopod or selfie stick, but also folds out into a tripod when needed. When in selfie mode, the grip is wide and comfortable for holding, and has built in texture to aid your grip. It can telescope out to 28” which is about perfect for its purpose. The Tripod Stick is a great compliment to the Media Mod for vlogging or shooting selfie style video. I use this as my main GoPro setup for vlogging or run and gun style videography. I keep a GoPro Hero 9 with the Media Mod on Tripod Stick.
GoPro Max Lens Mod
The GoPro Max Lens Mod widens the lens angle out to 155° Ultra Wide. The wide angle is great for shots where you want to bring in more off the scene. I use the Max Lens Mod on my helmet cam for activities such as Paramotoring, and Skiing. Additional features of the Max Lens Mod include Max Hypersmooth and Horizon Lock.
Magnetic Swivel Clip
The GoPro Magnetic Swivel Clip is very useful for putting your action camera in unique places and capturing interesting angles and perspectives. This is great for B-Roll shots to spruce up your edits such as clipping camera to your skis or snowboard when on the lift, or walking to or from your vehicle. The clip is very strong, and the 360 degree rotation allows you to angle the camera wherever you need to for the shot. I have even used this through my shoe laces as a paragliding camera to shoot a 3rd person view of some glides from my shoe’s perspective.
GoPro Bite Mount
This mount may seam silly at first, but it really is useful. Its great for any POV action shots including watersports as it comes with a Floaty case. The Floaty is removable when not needed. My favorite use for this is pairing it with the above mentioned Swivel Clip Mount. On the opposite side of the bite is a standard action cam clip which allows it to mount on 360 degree rotational mount of the Magnetic Swivel Clip. This packs a serious punch because you now have a small, lightweight, and extremely versatile mount. It can be clipped for unique B Roll perspectives as mentioned above, but can also be rotated quickly and used as a POV camera. I keep a GoPro dedicated to this package as my one size fits all B Roll camera which allows me to shoot more on the fly without having to stop and change cameras or mounts as often.
NVG Helmet Mount
The most common method of mounting GoPro’s to helmets is the use of the 3M Adhesive Mounts. A lot of people swear by those, but I have not been as fortunate and have had cameras fall off my helmets on several occasions (Yes, they were put on properly!). For that reason, I heavily prefer a fixed mount that does not rely on adhesive. I like the Night Vision Goggle or NVG GoPro Mount for this. It is a push button disconnect so putting the camera on and taking it off is quick and simple. My Paramotor helmet is a tactical bump helmet so it already had an NVG base. I installed a similar base on my Black Diamond Adventure Helmet. This setup means my helmet camera is secure and can easily be moved between helmets for different adventures or activities.
GoPro Seeker/ Daytripper Backpack
The GoPro Seeker Backpack has been replaced with the Daytripper Backpack. They are very similar. I am still using the Seeker backpack and love it so I figured I would link it here. The GoPro Backpacks are weather and water resistant and built rugged. They are a lower profile and perfect for hiking, biking, skiing, daily use, etc. The top compartment is padded and setup well for GoPro cameras and allows quick easy access. The backpack also has a rear compartment that can house a 15” laptop or a hydration bladder. The front shoulder straps have a built in GoPro mount for hands free shooting. My GoPro Seeker Backpack is my most used bag. I literally take it with me everywhere I go. I keep certain items with it at all times, and switch out other accessories based on where I am going or what I will be doing. The GoPro backpacks area great way to keep your GoPro gear at the ready and in one easy to find place!
Ultra Long Selfie Stick
The Ultra Long Selfie Stick is a bit more specialized than some of the other GoPro gear on this list, but it certainly has its place. Its great for selfie style shooting that involves multiple people where you need to get the camera out much further than the GoPro Tripod Stick or other more common selfie sticks. I also enjoy using it in tandem with the GoPro Max 360 camera. I mounted it to the swing arms of my Paramotor for some unique 3rd person shots of takeoffs and landings. Its length can also be unique for sticking out the window of a car, or the top of a GoPro Backpack while skiing or snowboarding, or even a Paragliding harness for those interesting 3rd person video game style shots.
Mini Tripod
The GoPro Mini Tripod is a small, pocket-sized tripod with a single short telescoping section. It can be used for many of the same activities as its larger counterparts but is a much better companion for situations where you are on the move with limited gear. It can really be tossed into a pocket! I like to keep it with me for vlogging or B-Roll when doing activities where I am not bringing along my backpack with extras such as hiking. I also use it from time to time with a “leave behind” GoPro to capture a time-lapse of the sky when I’m out doing something else.
3-Way Tripod
The 3-Way GoPro Tripod is the king of versatility. It can be a solid grip or monopod for shooting B-Roll. It has a unique and flexible extension arm that can put the camera in favorable positions for vlogging, and it also has a tripod feature for stationary shooting or time-lapsing. The 3-Way Tripod is incredibly valuable but I admittedly use it more as a standby option due mostly to the fact that I currently have a couple GoPro’s in service and preset for specific purposes. If your running one camera, the versatility of the 3-Way Tripod is untouchable.
Final Thoughts
There are so many unique mounts and GoPro extras available today, but these are the accessories that I keep with me and utilize the most. Other fun gear pops into the rotation from time to time and I am not exempt from succumbing to the temptation to purchase some new exciting specialized mount or gadget, but when all the dust settles, these 10 GoPro accessories pull the bulk of the weight in my action camera arsenal!
